A helping hand from you. A head start for them.
We want all our young people to have the best chance of success in life. To make sure that's the case, you'll give them extra help when they're in the classroom. The right support can really make an enormous difference. As a Teaching Assistant, you have to be understanding and committed. That's because the young people in our schools have social, emotional, mental health and complex learning needs that call for extra dedication. Help them progress and you'll have every opportunity to do the same with your career.
As a Teaching Assistant at Westmorland School, we have the same outlook as you. We know that enabling positive outcomes for young people facing complex challenges isn't an overnight fix. That's why we need a committed and enthusiastic individual, who is ready to start every day with a fresh outlook and welcome the children into their learning opportunities. Our work with the children isn't about us; we are a team who are all about the children all of the time.
The great thing for you is, you won't be alone in your goal to have a positive impact on our pupils' lives. You'll have all the support you need from the team.
You will need to be able to build trusting relationships with our learners to help them manage the learning challenges of the day. We all wear different hats here and in order for our pupils to succeed, you will need to think on your feet. It's about coaxing their confidence both academically and socially - helping them feel accepted and understood.
As an experienced Teaching Assistant already, you should be used to life in the classroom and up to date with welfare and safeguarding practices within Education. You'll also need to be qualified to at least NVQ level 2 (or equivalent) and have a relevant communication qualification such as PECS. Ideally you will have an understanding of speech, language and communication needs along with experience using interventions such as PECS and Intensive Interaction. You will have an awareness of sensory processing differences and experience of social, emotional and mental health needs. We need you to build great relationships with all our young people, so you can motivate them to do well and be the best that they can be. If you're emotionally strong and good in a team, we can offer a role with exciting prospects. There are occasional meetings outside school hours, for which your attendance will be required.
